Hand - Tinted look on your photo....



here is the promised tutorial!


i am not using the same photos i did on this layout. i found this cute one of my son from many years ago. as much as he has changed, he is still the same cutie he was then. same smile, just on an older face.




this is the photo that came straight out of the camera.

i should also add that i cannot take the credit for taking this photo. it was part of a photo shoot set up by Leah Warkentin from Design Pics. basically they do free photo shoots in exchange for using your photos for their stock photography business. the photographer will also give you a disk of the photos they took. i had a few favourites and learned some things at the same time. back to the tutorial!




this is the final result of my photo. a bit different than the ones of the kids on the bridge.

to start, open your photo in PSE (Photoshop Elements) or CS (Creative Suite or Photoshop).

the photo will appear enlarged in your screen. it should also automatically appear on the right column under "layers". there is a thumbnail version of the photo too. often it gets named to 'background'. simply meaning that it is your first layer. think of it like the foundation of the photoshop photo.

you now need to duplicate your background layer.

you can do this by clicking on IMAGE -> DUPLICATE in the pull down menu. or right-click the layer name and choose 'duplicate layer'. on a MAC, i just use the shortcut 'command j'.

make sure you have highlighted the 'LAYER 1", then click on SOFT LIGHT in the LAYERS pull down menu.



this is what the main photo looks like at this point. definitely more rich in colour.

this set of steps is very nice for a photo just on its own. but we will continue....

going back to the 'background' layer. click the eyeball icon in the little box to the left of the thumbnail photo. we want to HIDE this layer. notice we are back to where we started. or so it appears!

DUPLICATE "Layer 1". {you have to make sure that it is highlighted in blue when you do this.}

and back to "Layer 1" again. this time we are going to remove the colour from this layer.

if you have PSE, you may need to do this step differently. try ENHANCE -> ADJUST COLOR -> REMOVE COLOUR. don't over think this step. you just want to have a layer that is DESATURATED  or BLACK AND WHITE.

in CS it is a bit different. this window pops up and you can adjust the colours in even more detail. i did not. i clicked OK and moved on.



this is what my photo now looks like.

back to 'Layer 1" again. this is our DESATURATED or Black and White layer. now DUPLICATE this layer.



it is getting quite dark now. notice the change in the denim overalls? cool, isn't it?!

super dark. definitely not a great one to print out. even if the denim overalls look amazing.

at this point you should have FIVE layers in total. the middle three are all in Black and White. the bottom one is still hidden. the top one is still the way we left it. all of the photos have been copies of the first one, to which we added a SOFT LIGHT effect.

sometimes it helps me if i label each of my layers. you can do that at any time if it helps you. for now i will left the names as my computer labeled them. hopefully it will help you compare my screen to yours.

only a few more steps remaining!

this time we are going to work from the 2nd layer from the top of our list, or the last layer we were working on. the label i have is Layer 1 copy 2. pull down the LAYERS menu and select SCREEN.

okay. one more major step!

still keeping that 2nd layer highlighted....go to FILTER -> BLUR -> GAUSSIAN BLUR

i choose any number between 8 and 10 pixels. it creates the dreamy and glowing effect.

if your photo needs it, you can also add this same effect to the 3rd layer. again play around with the pixel size.

in this case, i went with 8.0 pixels. but i also chose to lower the opacity of this layer. the photo is quite dark around his feet, and very light around his face. i wanted to keep the dreamy effect...but not so much. one option i had was to use the erase tool for his face. but i was happy with the result of decreasing the opacity and went with that. this step i did not have to do with my other photos. sometimes you just get the perfect lighting and layout! and sometimes you don't.



this is my final result.

the last step is to FLATTEN your image. choose LAYER -> FLATTEN IMAGE. 

and you will be asked about that layer you hid. click OK. your image will not be affected.

but you will notice that all of your layers disappear and you are left with just one.

you can choose to save your image with all of the layers, but it will be saved as a .PSD file. and it is HUGE. it is great to have while you are deciding on photo effects. but it is a big space waster for your hard drive. flattening the image will convert it to a .JPG file and is much smaller.

however, we can make it even smaller. a typical point and shoot camera is not really meant to take photos for enlargements above the 5x7 size. sometimes you can get a good 8x10 print, but often they are a bit grainy. my default print size is 4x6. however i make them a bit larger or smaller if i know they are for a specific project. sometimes i will add the size into the name so that i don't forget or confuse it with another similar photo. for instance i would label it "aidan 4x6.jpg".

if you are sending it to a commercial printer, you don't need to set your resolution too high. last i checked most printers are not capable of printing higher than 250 ppi (pixels per inch). my habit is to set my computer to 300 ppi. only because it makes me happier. ha!! if this is a concern just ask the photo manager at the shop where you are getting them printed.

if you are interested, i did a comparison between London Drugs and Costco this winter. London Drugs came out higher in price, but the quality also matched it. the paper was heavier and the photos definitely had more depth to them. Costco was the lower cost, but the paper was really flimsy and the colours lacked the pop. presently i still use my printer for the photos i use in my scrapbooks. it is just the most convenient. depending on my project and the type of quality i want in the photo will determine where i get them printed.


if i am sizing it for my blog i set it lower. computer screen resolution is 72 ppi. you can keep it at 250 ppi, but it won't make it better and it will take up a lot of space. this sizing is the same for sending photos to Facebook, email or other sharing sites. if your photo is too small, you can always try to crop it at a larger size. sometimes that helps.


okay! if you are still reading....kudos for sticking around!! this was really two posts in one. i hope you find this helpful. i should note that i messed up my own photos a few times. i didn't do the duplicating enough times to the right layers. i had to go back and undo things while i worked on my reading and comprehension skills...ha!!

i really should check to see how many times i mention Wilna's name on my blogs. i think i am having an amazing year. so is Wilna. in a really big way!! recently she started designing digital kits for 2Peas. the first one was awesome, i did not think she could improve on it. i was wrong. i have loved her hearts for the longest time. this time she added in some cute little feathered friends.

every once in awhile she will have a giveaway. last week she had a giveaway for two of her digital quick pages. and i WON!! the embarrassing part was that i somehow missed reading the day she announced the winners....like seriously, how did that happen?

it was tough to choose. after much thought, i chose #1.

so many cool creative ideas i've come across lately. isn't it amazing how you think one day that you have seen it all....then bam! you come across several more amazing techniques. this is the best hobby ever!!


i felt sad today. know why? i realized that i would be spending tomorrow night at home. not working at Urban. the first Friday off in 3 weeks. i know Kristian will be happy not to rush home from work. but i will miss the camaraderie from the staff and customers. is that not great?! then i felt sad and happy at the same time. i am lucky.

THIS is the DAY

a few nights ago i was SUPPOSED to be going through my photo files from this past year and shortlisting them for printing. INSTEAD i decided it would be fun to play with some digital scrapping.

i decided to check my e-mail and had one from Designer Digitals. i get them regularly and learn about their Thrifty Thursdays and special sales. i am wanting to make another digital year in review album, so i figured it was smart to browse through this weeks's specials to find some possible kits for this year. see, i wasn't totally procrastinating! i ABSOLUTELY LOVE Katie Periet's photo masks. then i got this idea to try to make some on my own. she is very talented, and i am just experimenting. however i was happy with how i did. i now think there may be some hope for me to even make my own templates for the album this year. maybe.




i spent more time playing with the layout than the photo. the background paper is from Jessica Sprague. the ribbons are from SIStv. the yellow border is Rhonna Farrer. the newprint is from Sande Krieger. the font is from Chatterbox called Rust. i even tried "glitter spray" and i can't remember where i got that one from! the brushes are called Floral Swirl, and i also can't remember where i downloaded those.

one thing i noticed about digital sites....you can find digital kits and such from 2Peas and DesignerDigitals {see my links on the side}... they have the package that you are buying AND a few samples of projects that used these digital kits. one of my all-time favourite kits i downloaded were snowflakes from Rhonna Farrer off of 2Peas. i first saw them in print in a Scrapbooking Trends issue. i love those snowflakes so much that it almost makes me love winter! chance are if you like the element, or paper, or template when you first saw them....you will like them even more after you've had a chance to play around with them. if you are wondering about templates....i downloaded an entire set of year in review templates made by Katie Pertiet at Designer Digitals last year. my only regret is not ordering a larger album! {it was a printing company that i had never used before, so i went with an 8x8 album to test it out....sooo wish i had taken a risk and went for 12x12}


it is Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada. it's a cold one. we won't reach temperatures above zero degrees Celsius on any day. there is snow on the ground, but not enough to go sledding. i think i've missed the opportunity for fall photos. most trees still have their leaves and they are still green. {i've never witnessed green leaves in October before} with the freezing temperatures, the leaves have now frozen to their branches and are still green. my best guess is that they will eventually fall to the ground and stay green. unbelieveable! it's like we totally skipped autumn.

i took the kids out for a country drive last week. at our last house i had lots of favourite photo spots. i figured it was time to start checking out new ones. nearby! have i ever mentioned that my babies are good sports and are willing subjects?

i also had some free time this morning. yesterday was an ultra stressful day for me. some days it just sucks being the momma. all the same, it was nothing major...just stress. stress is never much fun. it was nice to sit back with a yummy coffee and play around in PSE. try some new things.

after the craziness of last week, i took some time to create some new layouts on the weekend. a mini-album class helped kick-start that. it was a memorable afternoon. Kiara and i worked away on our own projects, listening to i-tunes. while Aidan and daddy played some Lego StarWars on the wii. i think this was the first time we were able to hang out with our kids, and have them old enough to enjoy doing what we wanted. i guess it was a tiny glimpse of the near future?

today is a happy day! following another couple of very happy days.

my dilemna has been resolved. the layouts are in the proper hands and i am breathing a sigh of relief. although the magazine will probably see my name in the future and second guess inviting the parcel-crazy-lady to share her artwork! ugh. after having an other important parcel "lost" i guess i allowed myself the paranoia of it happening again?


and the other happy news....


my sweet, dear and talented husband installed a bright light above my scrap desk. i have been loving the extra space...and so have my kiddos because they like to do crafts alongside me. but the light was so dim, and with the daylight decreasing it has been tough to work after the kids are in bed. that translates to no work! when he finished he told me that i was welcome to take the entire night to scrapbook to my heart's content under the perfect light. so i did!!


i guess you could say i had some mojo that had to let loose? a card. three layouts. i'll share pics this week.

then i still had time to spare!

so i did some digi-scrapping. i really need to do photo-editing and send some to get printed. somehow i really wanted to play!


i designed my own template and used some SOC pics from Easter.

it got me to thinking of doing this for some 4x6 or 5x7 that i want to print out. i am really loving the new trend to use more than one photo on a layout. using templates would sure make things quicker, i'm thinking.


then i had to use a recent photo and just do a layout.

for the past few months i've been loving Wilna's digital stuff. isn't it amazing? this hardly compares to her work, but it did inspire this layout of mine. i used some of Katie Pertiet's grunge brushes to put this one together. DesignerDigitals is one of my favourite spots these days. when i have time.

it is a good day when i have had a chance to get my hands covered in glue and glitter. make a mess with paper and ribbon. AND practice some new skills on my laptop while i watch old movies.

{oh my! second post in a single day....this must be good!}


okay if you love katie pertiet or ali edwards or rhonna farrer or jessica sprague....this will be a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!


but if you have no idea who i'm talking about....maybe you will be IN AWE!


i am still waiting for my photo book that i made before Christmas to be delivered. it is finally finished the printing. now i'm waiting for Canada Post to bring it to me. it should have been here on wednesday....the suspense is driving me crazy! {a preschooler and a toddler could vouch for that!}



in the meantime....my dear husband is being widowed by photoshop...again!


in the making of the afore-mentioned photo book....also known as a digital scrapbook {i made the pages on my computer and sent them to a printer to be put into book format}....i purchased some templates to make the process quicker. i had never used a template before. and as i was using them i got thinking, "hey! i could do this."


so today i did!


the first example is just a frame for a 4x6 photo.

i am just in experimentation mode. and since this is not a highly publicized or highly regarded blog....i wanted to document my first attempt. especially since it was successful...as in "eureka! it worked!!"

okay.

then i tried a 12 x 12 template. {which could also be scaled to any square page format.}

yup! again...not an amazing and sale-worthy sketch. but a great start, i think!

i made it in a psd file in PSE 7. each grayscale colour is a separate layer. choose the paper and a few special moves....

and this is how it ends up!

i used Jessica Spragues kit 'Home Away From Home" papers for my final page.

after i added the photo i did some tweaking on the shape of the large photo {easy} and thickened the vertical border {also easy}.

on a serious note.

THIS ROCKS!!!

i cannot wait to make some more frames and templates. off to a good start, at least! maybe i can make my own brushes too. oooohhhh the possibilities!! if anything, this took the sting out of waiting for our national postal service....

i'm still working on the clean-up after Christmas. why does it take longer to clean everything up than it does to decorate?


i was THRILLED to have cleaned, organized and even purged my scrapbook area of the house. and i found new places to store things. now all my alcohol inks are in the same place, brads, flowers, ink pads, stamps....same place. it sort of helps to find things. of course i'm still trying to remember exactly where some of the stuff has been grouped!

but it feels good to have space on my table again. hooray for that!!

clear containers for much of my supplies. some supplies i've been able to store in same colour families. very helpful for the ribbon and flowers. one day i hope my buttons will get the same treatment!

i learned last year about using BINDERS AND CLEAR PLASTIC REPORT COVERS for storing packages of letters or stickers or rub-ons. i really liked that system. i also started a new binder just for my rub-ons. i have that terrible problem of falling in love with something...but forgetting that i had already bought it. the upside is unopened/unused packages can be returned and it definitely tells me that i really liked it!

i also went through and really purged all the teeny tiny scraps of patterned paper i had been hoarding. my kids will be happy when they realize the colourful papers they now have to create with! {truly they do not realize how lucky they are to have a huge selection of papers to choose from...right?!}

man i have a lot of stuff i need to get using. i have the photos...just need to take the time. sometimes i get overwhelmed by the ideas i see out in the scrapping world and the ideas floating in my head....and then i can't get my hands to put the stuff together.

between Christmas, clean-up, germies, cleaning, laundry, other committments...it is tough to have enough time to create something. most of the stuff i've done lately has been small stuff. like cards. yesterday i made a calendar for the kids. i also covered some chocolate bars in patterned paper and embellished them. {they are for a fundraiser...and they have not been selling. i'm hoping a pretty package will make them more desirable?!} it is a challenge to create when a little one HAS to be sitting on your lap....with the perfect view of whatever i'm doing....


i also worked on my project 52 this week. hopefully i'll get that posted tomorrow. or maybe even later today?

i should also post a photo of my finished 25 Days of Christmas album. i keep seeing other AMAZING albums completed....and feeling very self conscious about my own....so many album ideas out there these days...how could you choose just one?!

have you heard of Becky Higgins Project 365? i'll explain later, but as much as it sounds good....way too much work for me! maybe another year.

i'm slowly making my way through some blogs i follow. i usually do this in the morning while i drink my coffee. if i'm home! i like this part of my day...usually flies by too quickly.

i came across this photoshop tutorial on Kathy Thompson's site today. excellent! she is offering a few workshops with digital scrapbooking too. even if you don't like a page done digital...she has some great ideas for adding digital embellishment to a photo. she also has amazing photos...great for inspiration.

i don't print out my digital pages myself. our printer is now excellent for printing photos, so i may try some one day. in the past, i've done digital work on photos, then used those photos on my layouts. i still can't wait to get my digital photobook in the mail. i'm hoping it comes by the end of the week. the suspense is crazy!

i'll link the layouts that have digitally enhanced photos later this week. i've added brushes, stamps or text before sending my photo to the printer. {or sending them to get developped}

i finally completed my "year in review" album.

it has been converted to the book format.

now i just have to wait for it to arrive in the mail.

if you want to make a photo album unique....but don't want to mess with software programs or glue...

ONE.... go to a website, like shutterfly or photobook canada and use their templates. a new company is called scrapblog. all you need to do is decide which kind of book you want. then pick your photos. the designer of the book has done all the work for you.

Wilna is making her December countdown album in digital format. she is also making the templates available for free. they are cute and unique. she designed the artwork on my blog banner. go here for the tips, etc.

or TWO.... you have some photo software. some knowledge of putting pictures on to paper and adding ribbon or buttons...digitally! if you want to tackle an album with minimal stress....pick a kit that has templates for a book. then pick a kit that includes paper and all the embellishments that you love. and stick to those kits to make it easier on yourself. my kit had 20 pages. my album has 48 pages. some got doubled. but i know i won't be able to figure it out! i also purchased a paper kit...i didn't want to add many embellishments, since the book templates had some. my paper kit had 10 papers in total. that is all i used.

there are LOTS of websites that sell digital products. and some offer free stuff!

this time i went to DesignerDigitals. no complaints so far.

i have dabbled in digital products that i downloaded for free. tried them and got comfortable. decided i liked it. no sense putting money into something when you aren't sure if it is right for you. and when you have a choice....

well, my scrapbooking has had to take a backseat these days. both of my kids have been sick with a terrible stomach bug. not fun. for anyone. the washer and dryer are both getting good workouts.... we thought that Kiara was feeling better, but she is still trying to shake off the bug. it's nice that she sleeps because she has to be near me 90% the rest of the day! i love the cuddles..but after awhile it's nice to move too. really i'm also thankful that i'm healthy to take care of them. so divided!


this week i made it to Micheal's and bought some more Martha Stewart glitter. if you read my other blog, you heard that Kiara dumped one of my bottles over the kitchen floor. i noticed that these lids on the larger bottles are very tricky...and possibly slower for a 2 year old to open discreetly. it was 30% off. so i bought 2 bottles!

this afternoon - while Kiara slept - i was able to print off some photos and start journaling in our December countdown album. we are as far as day 8. not bad catch up! it's kind of a bummer, because nearly the first week is rather boring. not in real life! but it looks that way on paper. i just hope that we end the month better than we started.

i've also been plotting another album. i've been browsing online. thinking. looking at photos. more online browsing.

this one is going to be digital!

i am so excited!!!

because it is such a large task, i bought a pack of page templates by Katie Pertiet from Designer Digitals. i'm keeping the pages simple.

BUT it did make me think that i should continue to do more pages next year. a month at a time. then by December my work is done! time will tell if that actually happens.

i've had to do some playing around. finding my groove. the first few pages are always a little slow. i got one month done. hopefully i'll get more done tomorrow. i want to do 40 pages altogether. i now have 5 completed. wish me luck!

i just felt like putting together a digital layout today.

we're home with colds. love that plugged head feeling....


last Sunday i took Kiara and the camera to the zoo. i got some cute shots of her. and her teddy bear. i was anxious to find just one inspiring photo....determined to take less than ten minutes to choose one and get right into the layout. success!!! yay!

all of the stuff came from Jessica Sprague LivE's Page. it was fun. (except for the journalling and part of the title...those were downloaded fonts i've had for awhile)


already i see that i need to review the stuff i learned in my digi course from a few months ago. it is rewarding to put together a layout and not have any clean-up to do. unless you call "exit" a program clean-up! lol....

anyways it is fun to play around and see what i remember. try out other stuff. i kept it simple...just using stuff that i downloaded today.



i've been checking out some of the new stuff to hit stores this fall. basic grey is looking interesting....of course i was looking at Kelly Goree's blog....and i think she could do amazing stuff with just a plain paper bag....so we'll see what it looks like when i see it in person.




and when i wasn't dreaming about scrapbooking.....i cleaned our "office" yesterday. (it seems like the kids go crazy when i clean. apparently Kiara's pajama drawer needed some cleaning....of all the drawers for them to pick, i can live with that one!) so happy to have done some rearranging and feel like i have a bit more space. and i now have a "recent items" box on my desk. we'll see how that works for me! i like that feature on the computer....

i think i'm going to go work on some paper projects now. i'm sure Aidan would love to use his new office space....right?!

i took some time to play tonight.

i love everything about this layout except for the blue border. it needs something. but i love the title and some of the stuff i did with brushes. again all of it is free stuff i downloaded from a couple of sites. (which i really need to start bookmarking!)

i should be grateful.

Kristian came home with pse 6 last week.

it does have some cool features that pse 5 didn't have. but now i have another learning curve! i just finished my digi scrapping course at SIStv. and i was feeling very proud of the work i had been able to do with it. thankfully the course was designed for pse 4 and CS3 users. i guess i'll have to read the lessons for both users. i hope to find the answers in there somewhere. can't everything be simple?!

i guess it means i'll just have to take more time to play around and figure stuff out. the manual must be online. like it would even make sense anyway.... Scott Kelby i think i need your book. and i'm sure some savvy digi-scrapper has some good material too. i may need all the help i can get. may? no. that should say 'will'.

oh, and i started to put the kits together for my class. just a little over excited i think! and Pat told me that the class was half full...after only the first few days it was listed. happy dance happening here...

okay. it's a little scary. i have such a small amount of digi supplies. and i cannot believe how much i have done with just ONE kit.

now i have a new problem.

my scraproom has only so much space.

my computer only has so much space.

how do digi-scrappers keep track of all their stuff? there must be some system.

maybe digi-scrapping is not as economical as i once believed?

i'll do some more layouts from the last few lessons. we learned how to make some of our own elements. i'd like to have learned more about this aspect. i was concerned that a lot of this would be info i'd learned on my own. and lots was. BUT. i learned that i had a huge number of gaps in my learning....imagine that! hehehe

another lesson we'll have is making our own photo books. cool!

i am now just a tad eager for the next set of classes....

thankfully i have lots of scrap supplies on hand....and many projects to do as it is!!

my lovely SIL gave me a sweet gift certificate for Urban as a birthday gift. and i've been saving it....last night i was at the store for a class plus "coupon week"/"double points day" and bought the Making Memories Baby Love idea book, the Paper Trends April/May issue and a product that Urban put together....a transparency album with multiple style pages. thanks Arlene!! i made sure i got stuff that i wouldn't normally have bought on my own. oh! and the class was great! i only screwed up a few things....yes....the tough part - we used alcohol ink and melted plastic flowers - i managed really well. great first time luck. but had issues when it came to just using my adhesive!! hmmmm... silly! imagine the basics being the issue.

my first assignment...

so i managed to catch up on the videos last night and this afternoon. and did some homework after the kids went to bed. i am still amazed that the page took only an hour...using kayla aimee's tutorial that is. but i did add some of my own flair to it. and i took time to practice a few things she recommended. an hour. that is impressive. all it takes is a good teacher....thanks KA!!! (yeah, we are now close personal friends since i became one of her students.....should have taken the class with me.....see what you're missing out on!)

top of the list.....i'm glad that i hadn't done a lot of digital scrapping on my own before. not long enough to form too many bad habits. even though i've played around with PSE for a few years now....i have learned some things to speed up the process. word of the week for me is "layers". and here i thought i had been using them.

this week we'll get into more intricate stuff i guess. and i'm thrilled to learn that they are planning for an intermediate class as well. can't wait to sign up for that one.
