creative window decor

the old, old garage at our first home had these original wooden windows. only one of the panes is cracked. but all of the glass is still intact. i think a few of them had been replaced over the years by previous owners. when we moved i could not leave them behind. so they came with us. ready for me to refinish and hang in our brand new home! they have sat in our garage since moving day.

until now!

we were asked to create a project to display at the Creative Stitches Show and Canadian Scrapbooker Carnival. when i heard the theme of the display, i immediately thought of these old windows. it was the kick start i needed to get at least one of them decorated.

so if you are near Millenium Place in Sherwood Park then stop in and say hi. the Urban Scrapbook booth is incredible. the projects always look better in person. and the girls can tell you which products you can use to replicate the designs. Nicole is also there doing some demos today and tomorrow. cool stuff!

ok, back to my project....

i sanded them down slightly. {the reverse has never been painted and the natural wood is really cool too. it was tough to decide which side to decorate.}

i picked up a wreath at HomeSense. picked off all of the flowers.

took it outside, sprayed with adhesive and adhered a scattering of glitter to the branches. i started with my favourite glitter/bead/glass mix. i concentrated it on the centre ring. then i added clear glass glitter. some microfine glitter. i even sprinkled on a few specks of blue glitter in places. and the lawn has never looked sparklier!!

then in took to decorating the wreath.




enter my Silhouette Cameo and my Vagabond. i also put to work some Memory Box, Spellbinder and Dee's Distinctively. i used an assortment of the Prima papers for the flowers. lovely greys, ivory and pinks. i also used some paper punches too. the scallop circle is the best value for your money....sooooo much you can do with it!

i decided to keep the theme neutral. however, you can see many hints of Christmas if you look closely. check out some of the flower centres.

one of the embellishments is very subtle. again, better to be seen in person. i took some of the lovely Prima jewels and wrapped wire around them. then i twisted them onto the wreath so that they are sort of suspended around it. you can see 2 of them in the photo above....as well as their reflection.



i prefer to start with my larger flowers, then add in the smaller sizes.

then i added in leaves, pearls and gems. yes, those gems are sticky! they adhered very easily to my branches.

this little banner is not easy to see. it hangs behind the wreath. here is where you can really see the Christmas theme. i love that the theme is there....but not traditional Christmas colours. MyMind's Eye All is Bright by Rhonna Farrer. can that woman design anything terrible?! i have loved her designs since she first came on the scrapbook scene.

the key is hanging from a 7Gypsies hook and a Tim Holtz Ideology Wire Pin. the key is also Tim Holtz Ideology. it isn't visible in any of the photos, but it simply says "heart".

i also cut out a title from some white vinyl with my Cameo. my brain froze on great quotes....so i went with a title that came from the Silhouette store. it's a good title for any occasion!

i'm happy with how it turned out. it ended up being more work than i had expected. part of that was due to trying to decide on an idea....but the other part was that each of those window panes is huge! the glass itself is just over 8 x 10 inches.
